Salvage of ‘Wantok’, ‘Reunion’ & ‘Coopers Boat’ – Far North Queensland

Between April and May 2026, North Marine completed the salvage and disposal of three derelict vessels on behalf of Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ). The project involved the recovery of Wantok from Chinaman Creek, Reunion from Ninds Creek and Coopers Boat from Armit Creek near Mourilyan.

Scope of Work

Located across multiple waterways in Far North Queensland, each vessel presented unique challenges including restricted access, tidal influences, environmental sensitivities and varying vessel conditions. North Marine developed site-specific recovery methodologies to safely remove each vessel while minimising impacts on the surrounding environment.

Using a combination of workboats, barges, excavators and specialised salvage equipment, North Marine recovered, dismantled and removed the vessels from their respective locations. Works included vessel recovery, demolition, waste segregation, transport and disposal, together with environmental controls to prevent pollution and ensure all debris was removed from each site.

The project required careful coordination across multiple locations and demonstrated North Marine’s ability to efficiently deliver complex salvage operations in remote and environmentally sensitive areas. All works were completed in accordance with MSQ requirements and relevant environmental obligations.

Upon completion, all vessel materials were transported for appropriate disposal and each site was left clean and free of debris. The project was completed safely, with no environmental incidents recorded, further reinforcing North Marine’s capability in delivering marine salvage and derelict vessel removal projects throughout Northern Australia.
