Unknown Dive Object – Channel near Thursday Island, Queensland

In November 2024, North Marine was contracted by AMSA to investigate an unknown object resting on the seafloor at approximately 15m depth in the channel near Thursday Island. AMSA needed to determine if the object posed any risk to safe navigation in the area.

Scope of Work

The operation was conducted on vessel Lady Ningaloo. The project presented significant logistical challenges, including poor underwater visibility, strong tidal movements, powerful currents, and unpredictable weather conditions. Despite these obstacles, North Marine’s experienced dive team successfully identified the object as a large steel frame.

The structure remains in place, with findings reported to AMSA for further assessment and retrieval planning.
