In May and June 2025, North Marine was engaged to deliver a staged clean-up and make-safe operation on Double Island, located off the coast of Far North Queensland. The project focused on the removal and disposal of derelict materials across land and sea—ranging from abandoned machinery to submerged marine structures. Carried out over two phases, the operation combined commercial dive work with heavy-duty barge logistics. Despite challenging access and tidal conditions, the project was completed safely, efficiently, and in full compliance with environmental and regulatory requirements.
Scope of Work
North Marine was tasked with removing and disposing of a range of waste items and abandoned infrastructure across five categories: vehicles and machinery, general waste and debris, an aluminium jetty and submerged pontoon, derelict glamping huts, and a beached twin-hull vessel.
Phase 1 was led by our Dive Crew, who mobilised aboard Sea Horse to refloat the submerged pontoon and jetty structure using lift bags during low tide windows. Divers also stabilised and prepared the twin-hull vessel for towing. All works were carried out in line with ADAS standards.
Phase 2 was carried out by our Marine Crew aboard Pacific Ranger, towing barge WB IV. The team demolished glamping huts, consolidated waste and debris, and loaded more than 100 bulker bags and 13 skip bins worth of material over two marine logistics runs. All materials were returned to North Wharf and processed through licensed disposal facilities.
The operation was comprehensively documented with drone footage, photographic evidence, and detailed waste tracking in line with reporting requirements.
