In January 2026, North Marine was engaged by Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) to undertake the salvage, demolition and disposal of the derelict vessel Ocean Rambler from a remote coastal location south of Cape Bedford in Far North Queensland.

Scope of Work

Located in an environmentally sensitive area with limited access, the project required detailed planning to safely remove the vessel while minimising environmental impacts and meeting all regulatory requirements. The operation was further complicated by tidal constraints, remote logistics and the deteriorated condition of the vessel.

North Marine mobilised its purpose-built workboat Pacific Ranger together with barge Lucy and a specialised salvage team to the site. Following detailed pre-works inspections and site preparation, the vessel was systematically dismantled using an excavator and salvage equipment, with all recovered materials loaded directly onto the barge for transport and disposal.

Throughout the project, North Marine implemented strict environmental and biosecurity controls to protect the surrounding coastal environment. Careful management of fuel, waste and recovered materials ensured compliance with MSQ requirements and minimised disturbance to the site.

Following completion of demolition activities, the site was thoroughly cleaned and screened to recover any remaining debris. All vessel materials were removed from the location and transported for appropriate disposal.

The Ocean Rambler salvage was completed safely, efficiently and in full accordance with MSQ requirements. The site was left clean, stable and free from debris, with no environmental or biosecurity incidents recorded during the operation.
